John Mellencamp: Women Seem
Una canción poco conocida del gran rockero de Indiana probablemente sea Women Seem. Y digo una porque con el otro «Boss» de la música norteamericana siempre existe la oportunidad de rescatar composiciones que dentro de su extensa discografía habíamos pasado por alto. Es lo que sucede con alguien de tan larga y fructífera trayectoria, alguien que ha indagado tanto en la música y que emociona con solo unos golpes de guitarra y la autenticidad de su voz disco tras disco.
Women Seem pertenece al álbum número 17 y segundo con Columbia Records, Cuttin’ Heads (2001), donde una vez más andaba desplegando y enriqueciendo el sonido genuinamente americano compuesto de blues, folk, rock y gotas de country.
Las letras de Cuttin’Heads, como de costumbre, son un repaso crítico a la sociedad norteamericana de la que siempre fue un comentarista personal y rebelde. Y sin embargo no en este caso particular, ya que Women Seem resulta un divertimento, una exposición del propio John Mellecamp en clave irónica sobre su relación con las mujeres y un guiño acerca de los aprietos que provocan dichas relaciones.
El resumen de la letra de la canción es algo así como: me chiflan las mujeres, me encanta estar con ellas, reír con ellas, aunque te hagan daño y al final la relación resulte un considerable embrollo:
«But when it comes time for a commitment
the romance always seems to end.»«Pero cuando llega el momento de comprometerse
el romance siempre parece terminar.»
En definitiva y a pesar de todo, sí, parece que nos gustan mucho las mujeres y que siempre será así.
